Tuesday night volleyball stretched all the way into Wednesday across the Texas Panhandle after severe weather rolled through Amarillo, bringing shelter in place warnings and forcing multiple matches to be suspended before they could be completed. Teams left gyms Tuesday night not knowing exactly when they would finish, then returned Wednesday to pick up right where they left off. And there was plenty happening on the court too. Another busy weekend of volleyball across West Texas delivered a little bit of everything, but the biggest milestone belonged to Bushland head coach Jason Culpepper, who picked up career win No. 900 as the Lady Falcons swept Dalhart. Lubbock Cooper survived a five set road battle at Frenship Memorial, Childress outlasted Idalou in five, while Tascosa, Amarillo High, Randall, Canyon and West Plains continued to make their moves in district play.

The biggest story of the night came in Amarillo, where Tascosa knocked off Amarillo High for the first time since 2010, ending a drought that stretched more than 15 years and shaking up the District 3-5A race. But there was plenty more happening across West Texas. Frenship Memorial swept Monterey in a big Lubbock matchup, Lubbock Cooper closed out the first half of district play at 7-2, West Plains swept Hereford, Canyon answered after dropping the opening set against Dumas,

There was no timeout. No long conversation on the sideline. And apparently not much doubt about what Lubbock Cooper Liberty was going to do. The defending State Champion Bushland Lady Falcons survived three nail biters against Liberty, Amarillo High stayed perfect in District 3-5A, Canyon survived a five set battle with West Plains, and Randall continued its impressive start to district play. The weekend gave us another look at just how competitive volleyball is going to be across West Texas this fall. District 3-5A took center stage with a battle of unbeaten teams as Frenship handed Tascosa its first district loss, while Amarillo High remained perfect with an impressive sweep of Lubbock-Cooper. There is a lot to be excited about with Liberty Patriot Football this year, but the thing that jumps out to me first is this number. 37 seniors. This is the first senior class that has gone through all four years of Coach Sexton’s program, and after watching the growth of this group over the last couple of seasons, that matters.
