Crunch Time: Area Teams Battle for Playoff Position in Final Week of Regular Season

As the regular season winds down, the tension is rising across the South Plains and Panhandle. With one week left before the start of the postseason, several of the area’s top volleyball programs are battling for playoff seeding and in some cases, their playoff lives. From Amarillo High’s continued dominance to tight district races featuring Frenship, Canyon, and Coronado, the final stretch promises plenty of drama as teams look to close strong and carry momentum into the playoffs.

On their first-ever Senior Day, the Lubbock-Cooper Liberty Lady Patriots made it a night to remember, sweeping San Angelo Lake View in commanding fashion (25-8, 25-6, 25-8).


The victory was extra special as the Lady Patriots celebrated their inaugural Senior Class of Campbell Beeler, Braylee Barron, Abby Dallas, Jacelyn Gestes, Madi Heider, Taelyn Salinas, and Emily Southwell, a group that helped build the foundation of the Liberty volleyball program from day one.


The Lady Patriots continue their incredible run, adding another win to what’s already been a historic season in program history. 💙❤️

West Plains Sweeps Rival Randall in Statement Win


It was a dominant night for the West Plains Lady Wolves, who held serve at home with a commanding 3-0 sweep over rival Randall (25-11, 25-21, 25-18). The win moves West Plains to 10-2 in district play and into a 3-way tie for 1st place in district 4-4A.

Canyon Sweeps Dumas to Force Three-Way Tie Atop District 4-4A

The Canyon Lady Eagles were locked in from start to finish Saturday, rolling to a 3-0 sweep of Dumas (25-16, 25-16, 25-13). With the victory and West Plains’ win over Randall, Canyon now sits in a three-way tie for first place in the District 4-4A standings.

Canyon continues to build momentum down the stretch as the district race tightens, setting up a thrilling final week in 4-4A as Canyon will head to West Plains on Saturday.


Hereford Sweeps to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive


The Hereford Lady Whitefaces kept their postseason hopes alive with a dominant 3-0 sweep Saturday (25-10, 25-21, 25-11). With the victory, Hereford stays in the hunt, just two games back with two to play in the district race.

A strong all-around performance keeps Hereford’s playoff path alive as they look to close the regular season on a high note.

Andrews Falls in Five-Set Thriller to Seminole, Eyes First District Title Since 2017


It was another classic battle between two familiar foes as Andrews came up just short in a five-set heartbreaker to Seminole (22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 13-15). The loss drops the Lady Mustangs to 7-1 in district play, while Seminole tightens up the race near the top of the standings.


Despite the setback, Andrews still controls its own destiny in pursuit of its first district championship since 2017. The Lady Mustangs close out the regular season on the road at Fort Stockton tomorrow before returning home Friday night to host Monahans in what could be a title-clinching matchup.

Legacy Holds Off Frenship in Four-Set Battle


It was a back-and-forth district showdown in Midland as Legacy outlasted Frenship 25-21, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25 to hand the Lady Tigers a tough road loss.

Frenship moves to 25-15 overall and 5-3 in district and will look to bounce back Tuesday at home against Odessa Permian.

Shallowater Sweeps Childress to Stay Perfect in District Play


The Shallowater Fillies kept their momentum rolling Tuesday night with a clean sweep over Childress, taking care of business (25-10, 25-18, 25-8).


The win keeps Shallowater unbeaten in District 2-3A play as they continue to look every bit like one of the region’s top contenders.

The Fillies improve to 30-9 overall and 8-0 in district, remaining firmly atop the standings with an opportunity to clinch the outright District Championship tomorrow night in Idalou!


District 3-5A


With the playoff qualifiers locked in some intrigue was added to the district race as Lubbock Coronado has pulled even with Lubbock-Cooper at 10-4 with 2 games to go. The winner will get the #1 seed in 5A-Division 2.


Tascosa Sweeps Lubbock-Cooper in Dominant District Performance


The Tascosa Lady Rebels turned in an impressive all-around effort Tuesday night, sweeping Lubbock-Cooper at home (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) to continue their strong run through District 3-5A play.


Tascosa Leaders:


  • Presley Ward: 5 aces, 7 kills

  • Berkley Harper: 5 kills

  • Gabbie Mason: 5 kills

  • Ellen Daniel: 19 assists

  • Addison Merrell: 9 assists

  • Bennet Berryman: 16 digs


The Lady Pirates struggled to find rhythm on the road, dropping to 22-11 overall and 10-4 in district. They’ll look to bounce back Tuesday at home against Monterey.

  • Konli Johnston: 3 kills, 5 digs, 1 ace

  • Laney Devitt: 10 digs, 2 aces


Tascosa, meanwhile, continues to establish itself as one of the most balanced teams in the district with strong serving and steady defensive play.


Coronado Survives Five-Set Battle Against Caprock


The Lubbock Coronado Lady Mustangs had to grind out every point Saturday afternoon but ultimately found a way, pulling off a 5-set win over a gritty Caprock squad — (25-21, 19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9).

The victory pushes Coronado to 21-16 overall and 10-4 in district play.Up next, the Lady Mustangs return home Tuesday, October 21, for Senior Night and Pink Out against Lubbock High.

The Amarillo High Lady Sandies continued their dominance in District 3-5A, sweeping Monterey (25-11, 25-7, 25-13) to move to 29-9 overall and 15-0 in district.
