Tuesday night volleyball stretched all the way into Wednesday across the Texas Panhandle after severe weather rolled through Amarillo, bringing shelter in place warnings and forcing multiple matches to be suspended before they could be completed. Another busy weekend of volleyball across West Texas delivered a little bit of everything, but the biggest milestone belonged to Bushland head coach Jason Culpepper, who picked up career win No. 900 as the Lady Falcons swept Dalhart. Lubbock Cooper survived a five set road battle at Frenship Memorial, Childress outlasted Idalou in five, while Tascosa, Amarillo High, Randall, Canyon and West Plains continued to make their moves in district play.

The biggest story of the night came in Amarillo, where Tascosa knocked off Amarillo High for the first time since 2010, ending a drought that stretched more than 15 years and shaking up the District 3-5A race. Friday night delivered one of the biggest rivalry showdowns of the weekend as Lubbock Cooper took down Frenship, adding another chapter to a matchup that always seems to bring plenty of energy. That was far from the only drama. Plains survived a five set thriller, Perryton and Dumas went all five, and district races continued to take shape across West Texas. Thirty Six hours earlier, Alisa Blair wasn’t the head coach of the Texas Tech volleyball program. Tuesday night, she walked off the floor at United Supermarkets Arena 1-0. It certainly didn’t start the way Blair or the Lady Raiders envisioned. Texas Tech committed eight errors, hit just .034 and watched Tarleton State take control of the opening set in a 25-14 win.

District 3-5A took center stage with a battle of unbeaten teams as Frenship handed Tascosa its first district loss, while Amarillo High remained perfect with an impressive sweep of Lubbock-Cooper. Coronado and Memorial also picked up important district victories as the standings continue to take shape.

Had a great conversation this morning with a coach who asked me a pretty fun question: Who do I need to have my eyes on and why? So I thought I would share here as well as I have seen some really good volleyball this year. It feels strange calling September 1 a big night in district play, but in District 3-5A, that is exactly what tonight is. Brownfield snapped a 23 game losing streak to open the season with a win. Amarillo High earned early bragging rights with a 21-7 victory over crosstown rival Palo Duro.
