We’re officially into September, and the volleyball season is starting to get serious.

District 3-5A took another big step toward separating contenders from the pack Tuesday night, while across West Texas we saw rivalry battles, impressive road wins, milestone victories and teams beginning to find their stride as the season moves toward district play.

Tascosa and Amarillo High stayed perfect in District 3-5A. Frenship did the same with a sweep of Coronado. Liberty made a statement on the road at Canyon. Randall rolled past Shallowater while Karli Morrison collected career win No. 400, and New Home’s Kandi Stevens celebrated career win No. 100.

Amarillo High continued its impressive start to district play Tuesday night, making the trip to Lubbock and sweeping Monterey.

After taking the opening set, the Westerners found themselves trailing two sets to one before battling back to take a tight fourth and force the deciding fifth. Memorial ultimately made the final push, but it was an encouraging response from a Lubbock High team coming off a tough tournament weekend.

In a rematch from Saturday, the Liberty Lady Patriots hit the road Tuesday night and came away with an impressive sweep of Canyon.

Liberty grabbed the opening set, kept control through the second, then pulled away in the third to finish off the sweep and avenge their loss to the Lady Eagles just a few days earlier.
