The biggest story of the night came in Amarillo, where Tascosa knocked off Amarillo High for the first time since 2010, ending a drought that stretched more than 15 years and shaking up the District 3-5A race. Friday night delivered one of the biggest rivalry showdowns of the weekend as Lubbock Cooper took down Frenship, adding another chapter to a matchup that always seems to bring plenty of energy. Thirty Six hours earlier, Alisa Blair wasn’t the head coach of the Texas Tech volleyball program. Tuesday night, she walked off the floor at United Supermarkets Arena 1-0. It certainly didn’t start the way Blair or the Lady Raiders envisioned. Texas Tech committed eight errors, hit just .034 and watched Tarleton State take control of the opening set in a 25-14 win.

District races are starting to take shape, and the weekend gave us plenty to talk about. The weekend gave us another look at just how competitive volleyball is going to be across West Texas this fall. District 3-5A took center stage with a battle of unbeaten teams as Frenship handed Tascosa its first district loss, while Amarillo High remained perfect with an impressive sweep of Lubbock-Cooper. Coronado and Memorial also picked up important district victories as the standings continue to take shape.

Had a great conversation this morning with a coach who asked me a pretty fun question: Who do I need to have my eyes on and why? So I thought I would share here as well as I have seen some really good volleyball this year. I am going to break this up into front row and back row players, and this is honestly in no particular order nor is it the entire list of top talent we have her in West Texas. It feels strange calling September 1 a big night in district play, but in District 3-5A, that is exactly what tonight is. After tonight, we will already be 30% of the way through district play, and this is about the point where teams can start separating themselves from the pack. The wait is over. After months of offseason workouts, team camps, and anticipation, high school volleyball officially returned Tuesday night across West Texas. And opening night delivered. New coaches earned their first wins. Brand new programs made history. Heavyweights battled in five set thrillers. Rivalries were renewed. Young stars announced themselves, and plenty of teams gave us an early glimpse of what could be a special season.

We talked about the New Home Lady Leopards a few weeks ago coming out of team camp but after seeing them again during their opening scrimmages this weekend one thing continues to stand out. This team is getting better in a hurry. Every time you see them they have grown by leaps and bounds. What Coach Kandi Stephens is building in New Home is absolutely phenomenal, especially when you consider how little volleyball experience this roster had when the process began.

Saturday morning at LCP was my first chance to see Coach Paige Hauger and her Cowgirls, but before jumping into this year’s squad, you have to talk about the job Hauger did in Year 1 at Plains.

Volleyball season is officially here, and our first stop of the year took RG and I out to Trinity Christian Thursday night for the Lady Lions’ Red and Navy Scrimmage.
