Weekend Volleyball Roundup: Big Wins, Statement Matches, and a Five-Set Thriller

This weekend delivered plenty of storylines on the court before most of the Texas Panhandle turns their eyes towards district play. From Amarillo High staying unbeaten in District 3-5A, to Lubbock-Cooper and Coronado picking up key wins, to Liberty closing out non-district play with momentum, teams are starting to separate themselves as contenders.
Andrews and Frenship treated fans to the match of the weekend, a five-set classic that showed just how high the level of volleyball is across West Texas. Add in strong performances from programs like West Plains, Monterey, Pampa, and others, and it’s clear the intensity is only going to build as September rolls on.

Here’s a look back at the highlights from an action-packed weekend of volleyball.
Amarillo High Rolls Past Caprock
The Amarillo High Lady Sandies stayed perfect in district play Friday night, sweeping Caprock in dominant fashion 25-5, 25-5, 25-11.
Harper Vaughan led the way offensively finishing with 11 kills and 14 assists, while setter Bennett Rea added 14 assists of her own. On the defensive end, Ellen Head anchored the back row with 10 digs.
With the win, Amarillo High climbs to 4-0 in District 3-5A play and sits alone at the top of the standings heading into Tuesday’s matchup with Lubbock High.
Coronado Sweeps Palo Duro to Stay Hot in District

The Coronado Lady Mustangs continued their strong play Friday night with a straight-set win over Palo Duro, taking the match 25-17, 25-17, 25-12.
Malory Holdman set the tone with 15 assists, 6 aces, and 4 digs, while Caitlyn Olguin added 7 assists and 3 aces. At the net, Kaleigh Smith recorded 6 kills and a block, Hailee Parrott Curtis tallied 7 kills and 4 digs, and Ly’Ric Hargers posted 5 kills, 4 blocks, and an ace. Vivien Welch chipped in 3 kills and 5 digs, with Keira Shepherd adding 2 kills.
With the win, Coronado moves to 3-1 in District 4-5A and 14-13 overall. The Lady Mustangs now turn their attention to a non-district showdown against Frenship on Tuesday night.
Lubbock-Cooper Sweeps Plainview on the Road

The Lubbock-Cooper Lady Pirates picked up a key district win Friday night, sweeping Plainview on the road 25-21, 25-14, 25-15.
Bry Carlile paced the attack with 11 kills and added 8 digs, while Konli Johnston turned in a strong defensive effort with 17 digs to go along with 4 kills. Setter Broox Lopez kept the offense running smoothly with 29 assists and chipped in 6 kills, while Haley McCallick added balance at the net with 9 kills and 8 digs.
With the victory, the Lady Pirates improve to 14-8 overall and 2-1 in District 4-5A play.
Monterey Handles Lubbock High in District Sweep
The Monterey Lady Plainsmen kept control of their district race with a straight-set victory over Lubbock High on Friday night, winning 25-17, 28-26, 25-15.
Monterey used steady play in the opening and closing sets and held off a late surge from the Lady Westerners in a tight second set to complete the sweep.
With the win, Monterey adds another key mark in district play as both teams continue their push toward the postseason.
Tascosa Outlasts Canyon in Non-District Clash

The Tascosa Lady Rebels took a break from District 3-5A action on Saturday and came away with a hard-fought sweep over Canyon, winning 27-25, 25-22, 28-26.
Harlan Singleton paced the Rebel offense with 11 kills, while Gabbie Mason chipped in 7. Defensively, Bennett Berryman turned in a standout performance with 24 digs. Setting duties were shared with Libby Miller dishing out 18 assists and Addison Merrell adding 17.
The victory gives Tascosa momentum as they return to district play this Tuesday at Lubbock Monterey

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: Andrews Outlasts Frenship in Five-Set Classic

On Friday night the Andrews Lady Mustangs and Frenship Lady Tigers delivered the match of the weekend, going the distance in a five-set thriller that ended with Andrews on top 25-17, 22-25, 26-24, 16-25, 15-12.
Andrews was led by a monster night from Rylan Newbrough, who piled up 25 kills, 13 digs, and 3 blocks. Setter Emma Sauceda fueled the offense with 56 assists while adding 15 digs, 2 aces, and a block. Defensively, Danlee Fisher was outstanding with 30 digs and an ace, while Addy Baeza (11 kills, 6 digs) and Macie Miller (21 digs, 3 aces) gave the Lady Mustangs balance across the floor.
Frenship pushed the match to the limit behind strong performances of their own. Reese Roberts posted 21 kills, 17 digs, 4 aces, and a block, while Bliss Dane tallied 12 kills, 19 digs, and 3 blocks. Brooklyn Cox chipped in 8 kills and 2 blocks, and Hana Hutcheson set the tone with 22 assists, 15 digs, and an ace. Emma Harrell anchored the defense with 28 digs to go along with 8 assists and 4 aces.
In the decisive fifth set, Andrews held steady to edge the Lady Tigers and cap one of the most exciting matches of the young season.
Liberty Closes Non-District with Four-Set Win over Randall

The Liberty Lady Patriots wrapped up non-district play on Saturday with a strong showing, defeating Randall 25-20, 15-25, 25-8, 25-18 inside the House of Doom.
Abby Dallas and Campbell Beeler led the attack with 9 kills apiece, while setters Jacelyn Gestes (16 assists, 11 digs) and Karson Killham (14 assists, 13 digs) balanced the offense. Defensively, Kennedy Ezell anchored the back row with 21 digs. At the net, Ellis Roberts posted 5 blocks, while Dallas and Madi Heider each added 4.
The Lady Patriots will now turn the page to District 4-5A play, opening Tuesday at Frenship Memorial.
West Plains Outlasts Shallowater in Four-Set Battle
The West Plains Lady Wolves picked up a statement win on Saturday, defeating Shallowater 3-1 by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18.
West Plains (18-8) was powered by a dominant one-two punch at the net as Aaniyah Kitchen and Kynzie Ward each finished with 20 kills. Kitchen also tallied 6 blocks, while Ward kept the offense rolling with steady swings. Cecilia Murillo dished out 26 assists, with Bella Wineburg adding 22. Defensively, Idaly Sotelo was everywhere, racking up 20 digs and 3 aces.
Shallowater (19-7) battled throughout, led by a balanced attack. Carli Buckley posted 13 kills, 5 digs, and 2 blocks, while Emma Clawson and Jorja McGuire each finished with 12 and 11 kills respectively. McGuire added 11 digs and 3 blocks, while Clawson chipped in 3 digs and a block. Setter Aniston VanAtta dished out 21 assists with 11 digs, and Taylor Wood anchored the back row with 24 digs.
Despite dropping the third set, West Plains closed strong in the fourth to secure the road victory.
Pampa Takes Four-Set Battle Over Dalhart
Pampa and Dalhart squared off in a competitive non-district matchup, with the Lady Harvesters coming away with a 3-1 victory by scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 26-24.
Each set was tightly contested, with Dalhart evening the match in the second before Pampa closed it out in the third and fourth to seal the win.
