Last year, Parker and I had the privilege of calling one of the biggest games in the state: the 3A Division II Regional Semifinal between Jacksboro and Gunter. It didn’t take long during warmups to realize Gunter’s kicker (and quarterback) was something special. The accuracy, the leg strength, the confidence… it was clear that Preston Tarpley was a difference-maker.
So when Oklahoma released their fall roster ahead of camp this week and Tarpley’s name was on it, it didn’t come as a shock — it came as a confirmation.

A Standout Senior Season
Tarpley closed out his senior year in true championship fashion:
PATs: 81-of-83
Field Goals: 10-of-11 — including a perfect 9-for-9 in the playoffs
Kickoffs: 75% went for touchbacks
Passing Yards: 2,445
Total Touchdowns: 28
A dual-threat in every sense, Tarpley was both a precision kicker and a playmaker at quarterback, helping lead Gunter to its third straight UIL 3A-D2 State Championship.
A Historic Career
Tarpley’s consistency over four years is what really sets him apart:
Career PATs: 276-of-281 — 5th all-time in Texas history
Career FGs: 24-of-31
348 Career Kicking Points
165 Consecutive PATs — 2nd all-time in Texas
That kind of production doesn’t just happen — it comes from elite preparation, mental toughness, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
What’s Next at OU
Now wearing #33 for the Sooners, Tarpley enters a kicking room that includes:
UTSA transfer Tate Sandell
Kennesaw State transfer Austin Welch
Central Oklahoma transfer Grayson Miller
Redshirt freshman Liam Evans
It’s a competitive group, but don’t be surprised if Tarpley continues to rise to the moment, just like he’s done every step of his high school career.

A Steal in Plain Sight
To many, this may have looked like a quiet roster addition. But to those who watched Tarpley closely, especially under Friday night lights in Texas, it’s clear Oklahoma may have landed one of the most reliable kickers in the state.
Congratulations to Preston Tarpley, Gunter football, and everyone who played a part in this journey. Sooner Nation, you’ve got a good one.
