Two of the top programs in Class 5A are set to square off in Brownwood with everything on the line. The Lubbock Cooper Pirates and Grapevine Mustangs will clash in the Region I Final, each just one series away from punching their ticket to the UIL State Tournament. It’s a matchup of playoff-tested teams with elite pitching, deep lineups, and contrasting styles—Cooper’s grind-it-out, defensive brand of baseball meets Grapevine’s high-octane offense and dominant arms. Buckle up, this one has all the makings of a classic.

The Pirates are back in the Regional Final after grinding their way through three nail-biting series. Clutch pitching, rock-solid defense, and a gritty lineup that finds ways to manufacture runs have defined Cooper’s postseason identity. From walk-offs to shutdowns, the Pirates are proving they’re built for big moments.

📈 Playoff Path:

  • Bi-District vs Wichita Falls: W 5-4, L 1-2, W 8-3

  • Area vs El Paso Horizon: W 1-0, W 3-2

  • Regional Semis vs Argyle: W 1-0 (12 inn), L 0-3, W 3-0

🔍 What to Watch:

  • Jake Qualia is the Pirates’ ace and a warrior on the mound. He threw 10 shutout innings in Game 1 vs. Argyle and has been nearly untouchable all postseason.

  • Gus Cook and Cruz Lopez give Cooper a true 3-headed monster in the rotation. Each has picked up key wins in pressure-packed moments, with Cook tossing a one-hit gem in the Argyle clincher.

  • The Pirates' offense has relied on key hits from Wyatt Self, Kaden Buske, and Boston Roberts, with Buske also creating havoc on the basepaths.

  • Don’t overlook the defense: Cooper hasn’t committed an error in their last three games and turned multiple double plays against Argyle.

Lubbock Cooper is no stranger to close games and they’re proving they know how to win them.

🐴 Grapevine Mustangs: Roll in with their high powered offense

After dropping a Game 1 stunner to Joshua in the Area Round, the Mustangs have responded with six straight playoff wins, including a two-game sweep of Wylie to punch their ticket to the Regional Final. Armed with two elite arms and one of the most dangerous lineups in Region II, Grapevine has championship pedigree and momentum.

📈 Playoff Path:

  • Bi-District vs Brewer: W 7-3, W 8-7 (11 inn)

  • Area vs Joshua: L 3-5, W 10-0, W 13-4

  • Regional Semis vs Wylie: W 5-0, W 4-0

🔍 What to Watch:

  • Luke Esquivel and Lale Esquivel form a lethal 1-2 punch on the mound. Both posted complete game shutouts against Wylie and combined for 13 scoreless innings in the Regional Semis.

  • Zack Goldstein and Connor Ray provide the pop, while Gianni Corral, Colin Park, and Thomas Powers add depth and timely hits to a stacked lineup.

  • The Mustangs aren’t just hitting—their defense has been clean, and they’ve run wild on the basepaths with 10+ stolen bases in the last two rounds.

  • Team speed, discipline at the plate, and experience have made this Grapevine squad dangerous from top to bottom.

The Mustangs are hot, confident, and aiming for their first state tournament appearance since 2016.

🔥 Final Thoughts

This matchup features two teams built to win in very different ways. Lubbock Cooper leans on elite pitching, clutch defense, and timely execution, while Grapevine brings the firepower and tempo. If you like tight, chess-match baseball with a trip to the State Tournament on the line, this is must-watch stuff.
