The Valley Patriots are headed back to the UIL State Semifinals after battling past a determined Boys Ranch Roughriders squad 56-52 Thursday night in the Region 1 1A-D1 Championship in Dimmitt.

It was anything but easy.

For most of the night, Valley found itself chasing the Roughriders. Boys Ranch, making the first regional final appearance in program history, came out aggressive and controlled the early tempo. The Roughriders led 18-16 after the first quarter and extended that advantage to 31-25 at halftime, putting the Patriots in an unfamiliar position.

Valley slowly began to chip away in the third quarter. Defensive pressure and improved execution on the offensive end helped the Patriots erase the deficit, and by the end of the period the game was deadlocked at 41-41.

The fourth quarter is where championship experience began to show.

With the game hanging in the balance, 6-foot-10 sophomore Corbin Taylor took over. Taylor proved to be a matchup nightmare for the Roughriders, finishing with a game-high 30 points, including 17 in the second half, as Valley finally grabbed the lead late in the game and held on for the victory.

His brother Kanyon Taylor added 12 points, giving the Patriots the inside presence they needed to complete the comeback.

The win pushes Valley to 28-4 on the season and secures another Region I-1A D1 title for the program.

Boys Ranch, meanwhile, closes the season with an impressive 16-10 record after a historic run that saw the Roughriders reach the regional finals for the first time in school history.

Now the Patriots turn their attention to the next challenge. Valley will face Munday (29-9) in the UIL Class 1A-D1 State Semifinal.
